Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) on Friday said its president and Baramulla MP, Engineer Rasheed, will observe a token hunger strike on July 13 to commemorate the martyrs of July 13, 1931.
In a statement, the party said the protest is also aimed at expressing opposition to what it called the continued neglect of the legacy of the 1931 martyrs by both the Union Government and the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
The AIP termed the sacrifices of the July 13 martyrs a significant milestone in Jammu and Kashmir's political history. It alleged that official observance of the day was discontinued in 2015 and claimed that people have since faced restrictions in visiting the martyrs' graveyard.
The party said the hunger strike is intended to reaffirm that historical events and sacrifices cannot be erased through administrative measures or changes in official policy.
According to the statement, Engineer Rasheed remains committed to highlighting issues related to the political rights, identity and historical legacy of the people of Jammu and Kashmir despite being in judicial custody.
