Jammu, Sep 22: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday inaugurated several new facilities at the University of Jammu, including a sports complex, shooting range, high mast lighting at the cricket stadium and the Tawi Guest House complex.

The facilities, developed at a cost of nearly Rs 10 crore, are aimed at strengthening infrastructure for athletes, students, researchers and visitors to the university.

Congratulating the university administration and other stakeholders, Sinha said the new facilities would further enhance Jammu University’s role as a centre of academic, sporting and institutional excellence.

Addressing students and faculty members, the Lieutenant Governor spoke about the growing influence of artificial intelligence and questioned how education should evolve in an era of rapidly advancing technology.

Sinha stressed that technology should serve humanity and that decisions involving human dignity, health, livelihood, education and individual freedom must remain under human responsibility.

He said artificial intelligence can produce both positive and harmful outcomes and stressed the need for accountability when using increasingly powerful technologies.

“Machines can calculate, but they cannot feel. Machines can predict, but they cannot bear responsibility for decisions,” Sinha said.

He identified five key challenges before higher education, including keeping curricula relevant, moving away from rote learning, making classroom education more practical, encouraging original thinking and ensuring that technology does not widen the gap between rural and urban students.

Sinha also said the role of teachers would evolve with the growing use of technology. He said teachers of the future would need to function as mentors and guides who encourage curiosity, reasoning and character development.

He urged students and teachers to focus on lifelong learning, creativity, empathy, interdisciplinary collaboration and national development. He also emphasized the importance of balancing academic pursuits with sports and remaining connected to cultural values and traditions.

Sinha said the increasing power of modern technology makes ethical responsibility and wisdom equally important.

Vice Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, IGP Jammu Tejinder Singh, DIG JSK Range Shridhar Patil, Deputy Commissioner Jammu Rakesh Minhas, Dean Academic Affairs Prof J P Singh Joorel, faculty members and students attended the event.
