Habitual Fraudster Arrested in Srinagar for Allegedly Duping Traders and Shopkeepers

Srinagar, August 9: Srinagar Police have arrested a man accused of repeatedly cheating traders and shopkeepers through alleged fraudulent transactions and impersonation.

Police identified the accused as Ubaid Maqbool Khawaja, son of Maqbool Ahmad Khawaja, a resident of Gomal Chek, Tangdar, presently residing at Habib Colony, Alochi Bagh. He was arrested in connection with FIR No. 45/2026 registered at Police Station Maharaj Gunj under Sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to police, the accused has allegedly cheated several traders across Kashmir. Multiple complaints have been received from different areas, while he is also facing cases registered at other police stations.

These include FIR No. 76/2022 under Section 430 of the IPC at Police Station Kothibagh and FIR No. 83/2023 under Sections 201, 379, 416 and 430 of the IPC at Police Station Pulwama.

Police further said the accused had previously been detained under the Public Safety Act in connection with his alleged repeated involvement in criminal activities.

Further investigation is underway to identify any wider network linked to the accused and determine his alleged involvement in other cases of fraud.
