Jammu, July 21: Fresh landslides and mudslides triggered by persistent rainfall disrupted traffic along the Jammu, Srinagar National Highway on Tuesday, with restoration work in progress at several vulnerable locations amid continuing monsoon activity.
Officials said heavy rain in Udhampur and Ramban districts caused mudslides and shooting stones at multiple points along the highway, particularly near Sharda Mata Mandir and Thara. The incidents affected traffic movement and created hazardous conditions for commuters.
Teams from the National Highways Authority of India, Traffic Police and other concerned departments have launched clearance operations to remove debris and restore normal traffic. Authorities have advised commuters to check the latest traffic updates before setting out on the highway.
In Rajouri district, another landslide occurred in the Nograta Saldhar area after continuous rainfall triggered the movement of mud and rocks, disrupting local road connectivity. No casualties have been reported so far.
The incidents come amid a weather warning issued by the Meteorological Department, which has forecast very heavy rainfall in several districts of the Jammu region. The advisory also warns of thunderstorms, lightning, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
The districts under alert include Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban, where adverse weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few hours.
Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through landslide prone and hilly stretches. Residents have also been advised to stay away from rivers, streams and other flood vulnerable areas and to follow all advisories issued by district administrations and disaster management authorities.
The ongoing spell of rain has caused extensive damage across parts of Jammu and Kashmir in recent days, with flash floods, landslides and cloudbursts affecting homes, agricultural land, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.
Emergency response teams remain on high alert while restoration work continues at vulnerable locations to ensure the safe reopening of roads and the safety of commuters.
