Srinagar, August 19: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said he would meet US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir but would not raise the region’s internal issues as complaints before the American diplomat.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the scheduled meeting, Omar said he would discuss Jammu and Kashmir and the situation in the region with Gor, while making it clear that he did not expect Washington to provide solutions to the Union Territory’s internal matters.
“It is not my nature to complain,” Omar said, indicating that he would primarily listen to the visiting envoy during their interaction.
The Chief Minister said the US Ambassador was also visiting Jammu and Kashmir to hear from people and officials, and that he would listen to Gor’s views as well.
Omar questioned the need to approach a foreign government over issues that fall within the jurisdiction of India.
“Why should I raise our problems with a third country? It is New Delhi that has to find solutions to our problems,” he said.
His remarks came as Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, arrived in Jammu and Kashmir for his first visit to the region.
During his stay in Srinagar, Gor is scheduled to meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. His itinerary covers Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh, with the envoy expected to travel to Ladakh after his engagements in Srinagar.
