Waterlogging hits Srinagar after rainfall

April 09, 2026 | Mohmmad Daanish

Srinagar, April 8: Srinagar witnessed widespread waterlogging on Wednesday following intermittent rainfall, disrupting normal life across several parts of the city. Low-lying areas and key roads were inundated, causing inconvenience to commuters, pedestrians, and local residents.

Areas such as Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Lal Chowk, and parts of the old city reported accumulation of rainwater, leading to traffic slowdowns and temporary road blockages. Vehicles were seen wading through waterlogged streets, while pedestrians struggled to navigate flooded lanes.
The situation was aggravated by clogged drainage systems and slow water outflow, exposing gaps in urban drainage management. Residents expressed frustration over recurring flooding after even moderate rainfall, urging authorities to take long-term measures to address the issue.
Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and other departments rushed teams to affected locations to pump out water and clear blocked drains. Efforts were intensified to restore normal movement and prevent further accumulation as rains continued intermittently.
Shopkeepers in commercial areas reported a dip in business due to reduced footfall, while some households faced minor water ingress. However, no major damage or casualties were reported.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in flood-prone zones, and assured that steps are being taken to improve drainage infrastructure and mitigate such situations in the future.
