Understanding Patience !

September 17, 2020 | Tasaduq Maqbool Bhat

In daily conversations, we often come across the world “patience “. First we need to develop certain amount of comprehension to apprehend this word. What do we understand by the word patience and what does it actually means? Is it synonymous with waiting? Is it more than merely the ability to wait for something or someone? Well, that would be a vague explanation of this vast /umbrella term. Patience is more than what we have understood by this term. Patience means the ability /tendency to accept or tolerate delay, trouble or suffering without getting angry or upset. To my mind, patience is the ability to endure the dreadful moments with a content heart without developing negative self-concept or traits of delinquency. A patient individual never curses his stars /fate when things go wrong in his life. He musters all his courage, goes through fire and water, amends his ways and solves his problems.

Patience is a dear asset which leads an individual towards new triumphs in life and makes him a complacent individual. How would it assist an individual to achieve his lofty aims? You may ask. Well, patience is a virtue which imparts an individual with eternal flexibility, tolerance and complacency. It keeps an individual motivated in weal and woe. A patient individual positively accepts the vicissitudes of life and never injures his self-esteem by harboring negative emotions. Instead of rue, repentance and grief, patience adorns the heart with endless hope and enthusiasm.
Patience consoles a person, keeps him motivated and develops in him the steadfastness needed to conquer the triumphs in life. It helps an individual build a faith and keeps him going. Patience controls our behavior while we wait. It basically motivates us to be in zone and never give up. It engulfs the negative emotions and assists us in solving problems that we encounter.

How is Patience Different from Merely Waiting ?

When you ask someone to wait, they wait out of compulsion, they reluctantly wait for the things to happen. They simply kill the time and wait for their turn. However, patience is a virtue which triggers constructive behavior in a person. Patience inculcates positive attitude and motivates us to see and feel good while we wait. It controls our impulsive behavior and teaches us the philosophy of life. What if your younger brother /son or cousin fails to qualify any entrance exam? What encouraging words would you utter? Would you simply advise him to wait for the next year exam? No way. I guess, your encouraging speech might embrace the magical word “Patience”. Upon hearing the word Patience, the recipient gets charged with unprecedented enthusiasm and agility. This is because patience motivates him to work tirelessly and make things happen rather to wait for the things to happen. That is lit!

Patience In Deen-e-Islam :-

Our deen also provides wide room for patience. As Muslims, we are advised to be patient in brutal circumstances. Our almighty says in Quran, “Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives, and the fruits of your toil. But give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Those who say, when afflicted with calamity, 'To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return.' They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and mercy. They are the ones who receive guidance." (2:155-157). Hence it is clear that we have to muster all our courage while we go through the trials and tribulations. They are inevitable, even our Prophet (PBUH) has endured endless hardships while transfiguring the world with a divine message of Allah (Swt).Hence in all circumstances, we have to be content and strive hard to vanquish our hitches besides seeking help from almighty!

Bottom line!

It does not behoove a human being to be a chronic complainer in this world. We have been regarded as the crown of the creation only because we have such acumen to solve our problems. We are expected to strive hard and be patient when things go wrong. Of course with a positive attitude, patience and a steel will, we can make things happen and diffuse the bombs of despair!
