The Month of Blessings and Mercies

February 20, 2026 | Malik Manzoor

Ramadan is the holiest month of the year in Islam. During this month, Muslims observe fasting, which is the third pillar of Islam. This month holds immense significance, and those who respect it by following divine rules are truly fortunate and blessed.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that whoever fasts with full faith and seeking reward will have their past sins forgiven. It is a special time to train ourselves both physically and spiritually. As Muslims, we must abstain from negative acts such as slandering, backbiting, lying, showing bias, and abusing others. Thus, Ramadan provides an opportunity for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and striving toward moral excellence.
The primary objective of fasting is Taqwa (God-consciousness), which means maintaining a constant awareness of Allah. This awareness helps us develop discipline, self-restraint, the ability to do good, and the strength to avoid evil.
The rewards for good deeds are greatly multiplied in this month—far more than in other months. That is why we should increase our charity, give more alms, and help the needy.
This month is also known as the month of the Holy Quran, as the Quran was revealed to the heart of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Jibril (Gabriel). Therefore, reading the Holy Quran with deep understanding and reflection should become a daily routine.
Fasting is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam and was also obligatory for earlier nations. Fasting in Ramadan is mandatory for every capable Muslim, and it is a blessed duty that Allah Almighty has taken upon Himself to reward. As stated in a Hadith Qudsi: “Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
All acts of worship—prayer, fasting, and others—are performed solely to please Allah. There is a special secret between the fasting person and Allah, as fasting has no visible outward sign. For this reason, Allah rewards those who fast directly, without intermediaries, and even the angels are not informed of the exact reward.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) highlighted many virtues of fasting in authentic hadiths. For example:
It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Every good deed of the son of Adam is multiplied from ten to seven hundred times, but Allah says: ‘Except fasting, for it is for Me, and I will reward it, for he abandons his desires, food, and drink for My sake.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also mentioned five special blessings given to his ummah in Ramadan that were not granted to previous communities:
The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is more beloved to Allah than the fragrance of musk.
The fish in the seas pray for forgiveness for the fasting person until they break their fast.
Paradise is adorned daily, and Allah says, “My righteous servants will soon be relieved of worldly hardships and come to you.”
The rebellious devils are chained, preventing them from causing the harm they usually do outside Ramadan.
On the last night of Ramadan, complete forgiveness is granted to those who fast.
(Narrated in collections such as Musnad Ahmad and others; variations exist in wording.)
It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and seeking reward will have their past sins forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “In Paradise, there is a gate called Ar-Rayyan. On the Day of Resurrection, only those who fasted will enter through it. No one else will enter with them. It will be announced: ‘Where are those who fasted?’ They will rise, enter through it, and then the gate will be closed, so no one else can enter.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
In short, the month of Ramadan is a time of immense blessings, forgiveness, and mercy. It is an opportunity to seek refuge from sins, help the poor and needy, and pray for peace and prosperity.
Let us not miss this precious opportunity.
