The Last Ashra of Ramadhan

Ramadhan itself is a month of mercy, forgiveness, and liberation from the Hellfire. Yet the final ten days hold a special and elevated status in Islam. During these days, the doors of divine mercy open wider, and the believers are encouraged to increase their prayers, supplications, charity, and remembrance of Allah. Among the most beautiful practices of this period is Aetikaaf, a spiritual retreat in the mosque where a believer dedicates themselves completely to the worship of Allah.

As the holy month of Ramadhan approaches its final days, Muslims across the world enter the most spiritually significant period known as the last Ashra (last ten days). These days are not merely a continuation of fasting and prayer; they represent the pinnacle of devotion, reflection, and spiritual awakening. It is during this sacred period that believers intensify their worship, seek forgiveness, and hope to witness the most blessed night of the year Shab-e-Qadr, the Night of Power.

The Spiritual Beauty of Aetikaaf

Aetikaaf is the act of secluding oneself in a mosque during the last ten days of Ramadhan for the sole purpose of worship. The person observing Aetikaaf disconnects from worldly engagements and devotes time to prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah, and deep reflection.
This noble practice was regularly observed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It symbolizes complete surrender to Allah and reflects a believer’s sincere desire to seek divine mercy and forgiveness. In a world full of distractions and material pursuits, Aetikaaf provides an opportunity to reconnect with one's Creator and purify the heart.

The Blessed Night – Shab-e-Qadr

Within these final ten days lies the most sacred night in the entire year — Shab-e-Qadr, also known as the Night of Power or the Night of Decree. It is the night on which the Holy Qur’an was first revealed to humanity. Allah has granted this night immense virtue and significance, making worship during it more valuable than worship of a thousand months.
Allah Almighty beautifully describes this night in the Holy Qur’an:
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
(Qur’an 97:1-5)
This powerful passage illustrates the extraordinary nature of this night. Thousands of angels descend upon the earth with peace and blessings, observing the prayers and devotion of believers. The atmosphere of the night is filled with serenity, mercy, and divine grace until the break of dawn.

Searching for the Blessed Night

Although the exact date of Shab-e-Qadr is not known, Islamic teachings guide believers to seek it during the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadhan ... the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights. As the days pass, Muslims remain hopeful and vigilant in their worship, knowing that any of these nights could be the blessed one.
Already, several of these odd nights may have passed, yet the opportunity remains. Each remaining night carries the possibility of being the night that is better than a thousand months.

Teachings of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) strongly encouraged Muslims to search for this night and increase their worship during the final days of Ramadhan.
The Prophet said:
“Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
In another Hadith, he described the immense reward for those who spend this night in sincere prayer:
“Whoever stands in prayer during the Night of Qadr with faith and seeking reward from Allah will have all his previous sins forgiven.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
These teachings highlight the mercy and generosity of Allah. A single night of sincere devotion can lead to the forgiveness of past sins and bring immeasurable spiritual reward.

A Call for Reflection and Devotion

As the blessed nights continue, Muslims are reminded to seize this precious opportunity. The last Ashra of Ramadhan is not merely a passage of time but a divine invitation ... an invitation to cleanse the heart, strengthen faith, and reconnect with Allah.
Through Aetikaaf, prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, and heartfelt supplications, believers seek the mercy and blessings that descend upon the earth during these nights. Every moment of worship during this sacred period holds immense value.
Shab-e-Qadr is a night of hope, forgiveness, and transformation. It reminds humanity that even in the darkest moments of life, divine mercy is always within reach.
As the remaining nights of Ramadhan unfold, may every believer strive to find this blessed night and fill it with sincere prayers and devotion. For in the silence of these sacred hours, when angels descend and hearts turn towards their Creator, lies the possibility of a lifetime of spiritual renewal.
May Allah grant us the honor of witnessing Shab-e-Qadr and accept our prayers and devotion. Ameen.
