Technology: A Boon or a Bane ?

February 05, 2021 | Zubair Zahoor

The tracking of convenience is behavior inherent to humanity. Humans have always endeavored to make their lives much easier and Convenient through the utilization of available technology. Through this creativity and the marked innovation that sets the humanity apart from animals, feats of science and technology have allowed several benefits including heightened productivity and significant advancements in human durability. Looking through the annals of history, any historian would note that the benefits of depending on technology significantly have far outweighed the potential burdens that come with dependence on technology. Even though humans utilize technological tools on a daily basis, technology has become an essential part of life that has provided people with numerous resources such as internet, word-processing and other applications that make life more convenient.

Surely, without technology we would basically be so called "cave men". Technology does not only mean tablets, computers, smartphones and internet but everything in your bathroom, your alarm, electronic lights and cars, superfast trains and everything related to traffic. But If you spent 10 hours a day online, If you judge the quality of your life by the number of likes on your Facebook and Instagram display pictures, if you judge your success by the number of people that viewed your TikTok videos and the hours you spent while playing PUB-G then surely you have made a mess with your life and you did it to yourself..
Modern people are fully immersed in the digital age.. It's quite difficult and hard to imagine a world before the onset of internet & the world of smart phones.. Certain online gaming and entertaining Apps like PUBG, TIKTOK have created wreak havoc in our society. .But many of the sensitive people like me are of the view that in addition to making our lives better and more blooming, there are numerous negative sides to the over-use and being an addict of technology. It can be very much addicting and it can also hurt our communication skills. Extended, illegitimate screen time can cause serious health conditions like chronic Insomnia, Eye related problems like poor eyesight, pink eye (Conjunctivitis) and increased anxiety and depression.. Over-usage of technology damages the brain systems connecting emotional processing, attention and decision-making.
Most of the modern Studies link anxiety, severe depression, suicide attempts and suicide with the rise in use of smartphones, tablets and other devices.. Technology has the ability to Alter human physiology. It affects memory, attention spans and sleep cycles. This thing can be attributed to a scientific phenomenon known as neuroplasticity viz the brain's ability to alter its behavior based on new experiences. It’s not just the physical health that suffers from the overuse of technology but mental health suffers too.. According a recent research, people who use different kinds of social networking platforms have three times more risk of developing depression than those who use only few or nothing at all.
You should often avoid using cell phones and related devices before bed time as the same can lead to insomnia.. The insomnia arises because of the relatively shorter wavelength artificial blue radiation that almost every smart phone emits on a continuous basis, which disturbs your body's internal biological clock and circadian rhythm, and suppresses the release of a wonderful natural chemical called melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone.. Upon merging this scientific statement to the teachings of The Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad Saw, It can be inferred that most of the findings in current day medical sciences has their origin in Islam...As Hazrat-e-Aisha " was asked, how is the night prayer of the Prophet?" she replied, "He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed. When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan, he would get up. If he was in need of a bath he would take it; otherwise he would perform ablution and then go out (for the prayer)."So it is Sunnah to sleep early and it's associated benefits are tracked by medicine and Health care researchers after so long.
One of the most growing limitation associated with over-use of technology is that it leads to the “failure of skills ".. I remember a time when I was in high school and the fashion of pocket sized calculators was new and using them in classrooms was extremely forbidden especially during Maths class except when a more advanced math problem was encountered.. But if you look at today, the fashion of calculators on one hand has terminated and on other hand the birth of smart phone based super calculators have taken place. You'll find smart phones in pocket of at least every student in a high school and as a result more & more kids lose the basic Maths skills because they no longer know how to use them.
Another thing that has changed altogether is when I was in high school, everything was hand written either by pen or pencil. In class we were even made to write the answers of Questions that were asked at the end of a text. Not just for school But when we used to communicate anything, we would prefer a letter writing over direct voice communication.. Today, very little is communicated by writing. Everything is provided to our younger ones in schools in a printed form and all they have to do is to cram it and relax. Again, because kids don't use writing skills near as much, their handwriting suffers. Have you ever wondered how most of the kids write today? A teens handwriting looks like he is still in kindergarten.
Technology makes life easier in a positive sense. You can gain a lot of useful information if you use technology in a normal way. The bad effects of technology are caused by people themselves. We tend to use technology in a very bad way like spending our whole day on screens, Causing numerous road accidents by surfing and scrolling through apps like Facebook and Instagram even while crossing the roads and so on. Wasting half of days’ time while scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and playing addicting games like PUBG is a serious concern for most of the parents today. Although PUBG has been banned officially but Still our youth is raising voice to unban the same. We are worried about things that matter the least. Where Is our youth heading towards??
We Live in world where it is very difficult to get love while violence is practiced in broad daylight. Most of the people these days are hungry of love and care. Everyone Likes to be admired, loved and taken care of like there is no one luckier in world than him/her. Everyone needs someone to talk to them with undivided attention to share their thoughts and problems especially these days with an increase in conditions like depression and PTSD. Technology cannot just ruin your mental and Physical health but it has a lot of negative impact on your relationships too.. This is because of the fact that such addicts do not pay any heed to other things other than their material World and as a result relationships don't last so longer. But if you use technology in an intellectual way, you can get rid of most of the negative things that we have assigned to the word "Technology" And you can make life of many people around you calm, Peaceful and Worth Living.. So it's up to you as to how do you actually respond to technology and the other things associated with you. You only can decide whether technology is a boon or a bane for you in a real sense.
