Study flags social media impact on students in Kashmir

March 09, 2026 | Mohmmad Daanish

Srinagar, Mar 8: A recent study has revealed that nearly 45 percent of students in Kashmir are experiencing mental health issues linked to excessive use of social media, raising concerns among educators, parents, and health experts about the growing psychological impact of digital platforms on young minds.

The study, conducted among school and college students across different parts of the Kashmir Valley, highlights rising levels of anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, and low self-esteem associated with prolonged exposure to social media. Researchers noted that many students spend several hours daily on platforms such as messaging apps, video-sharing services, and social networking sites, often at the cost of academic focus and personal well-being.
Experts involved in the study said the findings point to an urgent need for awareness and structured interventions to promote healthier digital habits among students. They warned that excessive screen time, online comparison, cyberbullying, and the pressure to maintain a digital presence are contributing factors affecting students’ emotional and psychological stability.
Mental health professionals noted that the issue has become more prominent in recent years, particularly after the expansion of internet access and smartphone usage in the region. Many students reportedly experience difficulty managing their time online, which can lead to reduced sleep, poor academic performance, and social isolation.
Educators also expressed concern about the growing dependency on digital platforms among students. Several teachers observed that students are increasingly distracted by social media during study hours and often struggle to maintain concentration in classrooms.
Psychologists recommend that parents and schools play a proactive role in addressing the problem by monitoring screen time, encouraging offline activities, and creating supportive environments where students can openly discuss stress and emotional challenges. They also suggest integrating mental health awareness and digital literacy programmes into school curricula to help students develop responsible online behaviour.
The study further stresses the importance of balanced technology use, urging students to limit unnecessary screen time and focus on activities that support their physical and emotional well-being, including sports, reading, and face-to-face social interaction.
Experts believe that coordinated efforts by families, educational institutions, and policymakers will be essential in ensuring that social media remains a tool for learning and communication rather than a source of psychological distress for the younger generation.
