Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 5: As part of its ongoing media tour, the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Srinagar, facilitated a visit by a Srinagar press delegation to the Vizhinjam International Transshipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala, a major maritime infrastructure project developed by Adani Ports. Inaugurated in May 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vizhinjam Port (VIS) is India’s first deep-water container transshipment hub, designed to serve as a gateway to global trade.
Addressing the delegation, Pradeep Jayaraman, CEO of Adani Vizhinjam Port, highlighted the port’s role in reducing dependence on foreign ports, enhancing logistical efficiency, and strengthening India’s position in global supply chains. He emphasized the port’s state-of-the-art infrastructure, including modern quay cranes, advanced yard equipment, and integrated digital systems for seamless cargo handling.
Jayaraman also underlined Vizhinjam’s strategic advantages—its natural depth and proximity to major international shipping lanes—which enable efficient transshipment between global destinations. He added that the port’s multimodal connectivity links maritime operations with hinterland transportation networks, facilitating smooth movement of goods within India and abroad.
The port has achieved several notable firsts, including India’s first female crane operator, reflecting its focus on inclusivity and skill development. The Vehicle Traffic Management System, developed by an IIT Madras-incubated startup, showcases the integration of indigenous innovation into large-scale infrastructure.
The delegation, coordinated by Mahesh Guptan, Head of Communications, Adani Vizhinjam Port, toured multiple departments and the container yard, witnessing port operations monitored through advanced remote systems. VIS has a planned handling capacity of 1.5 million containers annually and has already serviced around 740 vessels, including some of the world’s largest container ships. The port also features the country’s largest breakwater wall, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
With increasing automation, the port emphasizes upskilling and training personnel in advanced technologies. It houses a dedicated training institute, focusing on capacity building for local communities, including training women and promoting organic farming practices.
At the start of the meeting, Majid Pandit, Media & Communication Officer, PIB Srinagar, introduced the members of the delegation. The visit is part of a five-day media outreach programme by PIB Srinagar aimed at providing journalists first-hand exposure to key national infrastructure projects, research institutions, and government initiatives.
