Srinagar, Feb 15: As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, markets across Srinagar are experiencing a surge in commercial activity, with shoppers stocking up on essential items and festive goods.
From Lal Chowk to traditional markets such as Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, and Maharaj Gunj, residents are purchasing dates, dry fruits, pulses, rice, sugar, cooking oil, spices, and other daily-use items in anticipation of Ramadan. Shops selling prayer essentials such as caps, tasbeehs, mats, and Islamic literature are also reporting steady demand.
Dry fruit dealers noted a particularly strong increase in sales of dates, an essential item for Iftar meals. Bakery owners are preparing special Ramadan varieties of bread and confectionery, while sweet shops are stocking ingredients for festive delicacies. Fruit and vegetable vendors are expecting higher sales of bananas, apples, cucumbers, and melons, commonly used during Iftar.
Although prices remain stable for now, some shoppers expressed concerns about potential price hikes. Retailers are replenishing stocks in wholesale markets to meet rising demand, while transporters are ensuring timely delivery of goods.
The pre-Ramadan shopping has brought vibrancy to city markets during evening hours, with families visiting together, providing a boost to local businesses after a relatively slow winter season. Traders remain optimistic that sales will continue to rise as Ramadan draws closer.
