The Kashmir Valley is a land of *Rishis*, Munis, perfect saints (Auliya-e-Kamilin), and revered elders. It is a sacred land graced by noble saints—most notably Abdul Rehman Shah Bulbul (RA), Amir-e-Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamadani (RA) (accompanied by 700 Sadat), and Hazrat Mir Muhammad Hamadani (son of Amir-e-Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamadani)—bestowing upon the valley a unique global identity. The shrines and places of worship of hundreds of eminent saints across Kashmir reflect the deep faith of the Kashmiri people to the world. Among these noble saints, Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani—Alamdar-e-Kashmir*—holds a distinguished place; he dedicated his life to the exaltation of the faith.
Alamdar-e-Kashmir is also known as Sheikh-ul-Alam and is regarded as the patron saint of the Kashmiris. He commands immense respect and reverence in the hearts of people from various faiths, not just Muslims.
Sheikh Noor-ud-Din was born in the Kaimoh area of Kulgam district. Kaimoh is the blessed place where Alamdar-e-Kashmir Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani spent his childhood and entered his youth.
It is a center of divine radiance where Hazrat Noor-ud-Din Noorani resided for twelve years. At this hallowed site—a place envied even by the heavens—rest his revered father Sheikh Salar-ud-Din, his respected mother Sadra Moj, his virtuous wife Zai Ded, his son Baba Haider, and his daughter Zoon Ded. Devotees state that the era of Sheikh-ul-Alam coincided with the reigns of Sultans Qutb-ud-Din, Sikandar, Ali Shah, and Zain-ul-Abidin in Kashmir. His parents embraced Islam through the influence of the great Islamic saint Hazrat Mir Sayyid Samnani, whose shrine is located in the Kulgam district.
According to devotees, the shrine of this perfect saint, situated in Kaimoh, sees a constant stream of visitors. His Urs (death anniversary) is observed annually, drawing people from all walks of life—regardless of religion, caste, color, or creed—to pay their respects.
An ancient spring is also located within the shrine complex; however, due to a lack of cleaning, it has become quite polluted. It is believed that Sheikh-ul-Alam and his family used water from this very spring for their daily needs.
Devotees note that the poetic works of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani and Lal Ded share significant similarities. Sheikh-ul-Alam pioneered Kashmiri poetry approximately 700 years ago, and many of his verses remain popular today—such as "Ann posh teli yeli wan posh," which translates to "Food will last as long as the forests last." He interpreted the Quran through his poetry; consequently, his verses are also referred to as Sheikh Shruq.
It is worth noting that Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani is also known by the title Nund Rishi. He was born in 1377 CE and passed away in 1440 CE at the age of 63. His mausoleum is located in Charar-e-Sharif, a site visited by thousands of people.
