
Srinagar, Mar 16: The Social Welfare Department organized a special awareness programme for senior citizens at Kashmir Haat under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana, aimed at educating the elderly about government welfare schemes, pension benefits, healthcare services, and other support facilities.
Renowned social reformer, historian, and poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad (JKAS) served as Guest of Honour. Several senior citizens were felicitated for their social contributions, including Zareef Ahmad Zareef, Mrs. Ruksana Jan, Abdul Ganie Parray, Ghulam Qadir Bhat, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, Ghulam Qadir Dar, Mushtaq Ahmed Shah (Mehram), and Mrs. Rahat Bibi.
Speaking at the event, Zareef Ahmad Zareef highlighted the pivotal role of senior citizens as pillars of society and stressed that the younger generation should learn from their experience and wisdom. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad emphasized welfare schemes for the elderly and encouraged visits to Ahata Waqar, a Day Care and Recreational Centre for senior citizens at Chanapora.
The programme featured an informative session by Ms. Nazia Wani, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, on various schemes and procedures to avail benefits. A skit highlighted challenges faced by the elderly, including neglect and abuse, reinforcing the importance of care and respect.
Medical guidance was provided by Dr. Saqiba and Dr. Laila Sultan, focusing on common health issues and the importance of regular check-ups. Legal awareness was shared by Ms. Zainab, Lawyer at One Stop Centre Srinagar, and financial literacy tips were provided by Reyaz Ahmad, counsellor at Jammu & Kashmir Bank. Yoga Instructor Mr. Younis demonstrated exercises promoting physical wellness and healthy ageing.
The event concluded with appreciation for the Social Welfare Department’s efforts in enhancing the dignity, well-being, and quality of life of senior citizens in the community.
