Science in Kashmiri

October 01, 2021 |

Kashmiri has a legacy of amalgamation of Sanskrit and Persian languages which makes it unique in the sub-continent and has thrived over centuries with changing environs and simultaneously adopted and adapted to the dynamic situation in Kashmir. Similarly Urdu is known for encompassing Hindustani culture and its rich tradition and emerged as language of masses in undivided India and played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. Both Kashmiri and Urdu are now on path of decline due to reasons unidentified and Centre is attempting to revive the scheduled languages and in this aspect Vigyan Prasar in its endeavour to promote regional language entered into an agreement with Kashmir University and Central University Kashmir to disseminate the scientific knowledge through Kashmiri and Urdu. Not only Kashmiri and Urdu but Dogri too would be included in the list of languages through which science would be imparted in learning institutions thereby implying that local language would get a boost as scientific terms and facts would be available in Kashmiri in Kashmir. The government in its bid to promote regional language put in place a mode of entrance examination in scores of local languages in India which helped students from remote parts to compete with English knowing aspirants and secure a berth in top notch engineering institutions. The venue of the signing of this vital MoU was Chrar-e-Sharief, the abode of peace, where lies the grave of revered Sufi saint of Kashmir, Alamdar-e- Kashmir Hazrat Sheikh-Ul Alam Noor Din Noorani (RA) who through his shruks or poems revolutionized the society. The great Rishi translated verses of the Holy Quran into Kashmiri and also quoted Hadith in Kashmiri thereby popularizing it in every sphere of life. Being influenced by revered Lal Ded, he made masses aware of environmental or social issues through Kashmiri which impacted the society and resulted in mass transformation during that period and thereafter. It was a tribute to his legacy that the MoU was signed at the resting place. Vigyan Prasar as the vanguard of the nation's S&T Communication Popularization & its Extension (SCoPE) agenda extended it in Kashmiri language which is in the list of Indian languages added in the eighth amendment. Now, KU and CUK should as a first step in this direction publish a dictionary of scientific terms in Kashmiri which would go a long way to promote local language. At KU, Sheikh Ul Alam Chair should be utilized to promote Kashmiri language as people in Valley have lost interest in speaking Kashmiri with children at home and instead prefer to talk in language which is not native thereby pointing to the inherent flaws in the society which is not ready to propagate its own language among the future generations.
