Srinagar, Mar 18: Srinagar witnessed widespread waterlogging on Wednesday following continuous rainfall, causing significant disruption to daily life across several parts of the city.
Low-lying areas and key roads were inundated as drainage systems struggled to cope with the sudden surge in rainwater. Localities including Lal Chowk, Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Bemina, and parts of the Downtown area reported accumulation of water, leading to traffic congestion and difficulties for pedestrians.
Commuters faced a tough time navigating through flooded streets, with vehicles moving slowly on submerged roads. In several areas, people were seen wading through waterlogged lanes, while shopkeepers expressed concern over potential damage to goods due to seepage.
Residents blamed inadequate drainage and poor maintenance for the recurring problem, saying even moderate rainfall leads to water accumulation in many parts of the city. “This has become a routine issue. Every time it rains, roads get flooded and movement becomes difficult,” a local resident said.
Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) said dewatering pumps were pressed into service in vulnerable areas to drain out excess water. They added that field teams were deployed to monitor the situation and ensure swift response wherever required.
The rainfall also impacted traffic flow, particularly during peak hours, with authorities advising commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and use alternate routes where possible.
The ongoing spell of rain, accompanied by a drop in temperature, is part of a broader weather system affecting Jammu and Kashmir, with forecasts indicating continued precipitation over the next couple of days.
Meanwhile, residents have urged authorities to take long-term measures to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent repeated waterlogging, especially as the city prepares for upcoming seasonal changes and increased public activity.
