Punctuality: The Cornerstone of Success

March 09, 2026 | Najia Ali Shah

“Better three hours too soon than a minute too late.”— William Shakespeare (The Merry Wives of Windsor, Act II, Scene II)Punctuality is the habit of being on time without fail. It serves as the foundation for achievement in life. This timeless principle holds true because those who fail to grasp the worth of time rarely taste success. Accomplished individuals masterfully value and manage their time. History's great figures have always prized punctuality. Without it, life becomes a series of unfulfilled commitments. India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, exemplified this by reciting lines from his beloved poet Robert Frost to stay mindful of his duties:“ The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.” These verses capture punctuality's essence: fulfilling obligations promptly, staying focused, and resisting distractions. True punctuality extends beyond mere arrival—it's about completing tasks at the optimal moment. Procrastination stems from poor planning and scattered attention. As the saying goes, “The dawn of a great day starts the night before.” Combat laziness by preparing schedules in advance. This virtue is rare, making it all the more precious in our fast-paced world, where it's often overlooked. Regrettably, in Kashmir, we struggle with it. Ongoing instability—strikes, curfews, and protests—disrupts daily life, closing schools for days or weeks. This turmoil fosters depression, frustration, and aggression among youth, eroding focus and breeding chronic lateness. The conflict's shadow stifles education and discipline, trapping generations in cycles of delay. Yet punctuality is a skill anyone can build, ideally from childhood when habits form most easily, though its rewards endure lifelong. It ensures tasks are finished on or ahead of schedule, yielding endless benefits .Imagine our society transformed if every citizen—students, teachers, professionals, politicians, doctors, and engineers—embraced punctuality. Peace, progress, and prosperity would follow, aligning systems for national glory. Youth, as future leaders, must lead this charge. A nation's growth hinges on its people's discipline and timeliness .In Islamic tradition, time is a sacred trust (amanah) from Allah, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) urged: “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before old age, health before illness, wealth before poverty, free time before busyness, and life before death” (Hadith in Hilyat al-Awliya). To foster it, start small: use alarms for prayer times (Salah), plan outfits and meals nightly, prioritize tasks with to-do lists, and hold accountability partners—like study groups resilient against curfews. Historical icons like Imam Bukhari, who rose at dawn for scholarship despite hardships, show punctuality thrives amid adversity. In Kashmir's context, it counters conflict's chaos, rebuilding focus for reforms in education and society. Punctuality reflects our love for time. It is directly linked to time's value—if we squander it, it wastes us. May Allah protect us from such loss! May wisdom guide us! May punctuality's angels, like morning light, rouse us early! May its rains refresh our weary minds! May Allah bless us all! (Ameen)
