Power hike hits common man hard: AIP leader

August 24, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Aug 23: The recent power tariff hikes from 1st September in Jammu and Kashmir have come as a severe blow to ordinary families and small businesses who are already reeling under inflation and economic distress.

Electricity is not a luxury, it is a basic necessity. When monthly bills double, it directly hits household budgets, children's education, and the survival of small shopkeepers, artisans and traders. People want relief and welfare measures, not additional hardships.
The Government of the day must understand the ground reality. In a region where winters are harsh and livelihoods are fragile, hiking power tariffs without improving supply and reliability is unjustified.
I urge the administration to:
Roll back the unjustified hike and review the tariff structure keeping the common man in mind.
Provide special concession to small businesses and commercial establishments who are the backbone of our local economy.
Ensure accountability and improve efficiency in the power sector instead of passing the burden onto consumers.
The Jammu Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party stands firmly with the people on this issue. The government must take immediate steps wherever possible to ease this burden and support the common man
