Polythene seized in Baramulla

October 03, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Baramulla, Oct 2: Baramulla Police seized 6.8 kg of banned polythene and recovered a fine of Rs 5,300 during an enforcement drive at Wagoora Market, officials said.

An additional Rs 200 fine was imposed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) during the checking drive.
Officials said the action was aimed at curbing the use and disposal of banned polythene, which contributes to plastic pollution and poses risks to land and aquatic ecosystems.
Discarded polythene can clog drains and water channels and contribute to litter accumulation, while improper disposal or burning can create additional environmental and health concerns.
The Central Pollution Control Board has advocated reducing dependence on single-use plastics and promoting reusable alternatives such as cloth, jute and canvas bags. Paper and certified compostable bags may also be used where appropriate.
Police said enforcement drives against banned polythene and other prohibited products would continue across the district.
