
Jammu, Feb 23: The Jammu and Kashmir government has spent over ₹487 crore on flood management projects since the devastating 2014 deluge. The investment includes strengthening embankments, dredging rivers and nallahs, upgrading pumping stations, and reinforcing flood control infrastructure.
Phase-I of the Flood Management Programme (₹399.29 crore) is largely complete, increasing the Jhelum river’s flood-carrying capacity from 31,800 to 41,000 cusecs. Phase-II (Part A), sanctioned at ₹1,623.43 crore in 2022, has so far spent ₹160.56 crore, with works including bank protection, anti-erosion measures, and regulatory gates at Hokersar wetland.
Officials emphasized that these phased initiatives aim to enhance preparedness and mitigate future flood risks in the valley.
