Srinagar, Feb 27: Residents of Nowgam area have expressed strong resentment over frequent and unscheduled power outages during the holy month of Ramadan, alleging that erratic electricity supply is severely disrupting daily life, particularly during crucial hours of Sehri and Iftar.
Locals said that despite repeated assurances from the authorities regarding improved power management during Ramadan, the area continues to face prolonged cuts, leaving households struggling at times when electricity is most needed. “Electricity goes off exactly during Sehri preparations and again at Iftar time. This is causing immense inconvenience to families who are fasting,” said a resident.
The residents stated that Ramadan is a sacred month marked by altered routines, with families waking up before dawn for Sehri and gathering in the evening for Iftar. They said uninterrupted power supply during these hours is essential for cooking, heating, lighting and other household needs.
Shopkeepers in the locality also complained that erratic supply is affecting their businesses, especially bakeries, restaurants and essential service providers who witness increased demand during the month. “Frequent outages not only disrupt our work but also lead to financial losses,” a trader said.
Many residents alleged that power cuts have increased in duration over the past few days, adding to public frustration. They urged the Power Development Department (PDD) to implement a proper schedule and ensure regularised supply at least during Sehri and Iftar hours.
“We understand that there may be technical issues, but the department must prioritise power during these specific hours in Ramadan. It is a basic necessity,” another local said.
The residents have appealed to the concerned authorities to intervene immediately and streamline the electricity supply in Nowgam to prevent further inconvenience during the holy month.
