Northern Command pays tribute to Field Marshal Cariappa

May 25, 2026 | Imran Khan

Udhampur, May 24: The Indian Army Northern Command paid rich tributes to Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, honouring his historic contribution to the nation and his role in shaping modern military leadership in independent India.

The tribute ceremony was led by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma along with all ranks of Northern Command. The occasion reflected deep respect for one of the most respected figures in India’s military history and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to the values he represented.
Field Marshal Cariappa holds a unique place in India’s defence history as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, taking charge in 1949 after Independence. His appointment marked a defining moment in India’s transition into a sovereign nation capable of leading its own armed forces.
He is widely regarded as one of the key architects of the modern Indian Army, helping transform it into a professional, disciplined, and apolitical institution dedicated to national service.
During the ceremony, Northern Command highlighted his lifelong dedication to discipline, integrity, and duty. Military officials described him not just as a commander, but as a visionary whose principles continue to guide generations of soldiers.
Field Marshal Cariappa strongly believed in national unity and consistently upheld the idea that the Army must remain above political and regional divisions. His leadership during the early post-Independence years helped strengthen cohesion and stability within the armed forces during a sensitive period in India’s history.
Serving in some of the country’s most challenging terrains, troops under the Northern Command continue to draw inspiration from his example of courage, sacrifice, and professionalism.
Army personnel also remembered his balanced leadership style—firm in discipline yet deeply concerned for the welfare of soldiers—qualities that earned him lasting respect within the ranks.
Defence observers note that remembering military icons like Field Marshal Cariappa helps reinforce the core values of service, discipline, and patriotism among younger generations of soldiers. His legacy continues to guide the Army as it adapts to evolving security challenges and modern warfare.
The tribute concluded with a reaffirmation of the Army’s commitment to upholding the ideals of selfless service, integrity, and national pride embodied by Field Marshal Cariappa, whose legacy remains deeply embedded in India’s military ethos.
