February 18, 2026 | BK News Service

Jammu, Feb 17: The Government on Tuesday clarified that there is no proposal at present for creation of a Tourism Development Authority for Kupwara district, though it would be considered if a formal proposal is submitted.

Minister for Tourism Javid Dar made the statement while responding to a question raised by legislator Mir Saifullah in the Assembly. The legislator highlighted that thousands of tourists are visiting scenic destinations such as Junagund, Wakabal, Keran and Dedkote in Kupwara, but basic facilities remain inadequate.
He pointed out that visitors often have to spend nights in the open due to lack of accommodation and said even a guest house has not been constructed in these areas despite increasing tourist inflow.
In his reply, the Minister stated that as of now, no proposal for setting up a Tourism Development Authority for Kupwara has been placed before the government. However, he added that if such a proposal is formally received, it will be examined as per norms.
Kupwara district, located in north Kashmir, has witnessed growing tourist interest in recent years owing to its scenic landscapes and border tourism potential. Locals have repeatedly sought improved infrastructure and hospitality facilities to cater to rising visitor numbers.
