Nishat Ansari was a dynamic personality of exceptional talent who devoted his entire life to the promotion, preservation and propagation of the Kashmiri language, literature and culture. His contribution to the literary and educational landscape of Jammu and Kashmir remains both remarkable and enduring.

Nishat Sahib occupied a distinguished place among the scholars and literary figures of Jammu and Kashmir. He was among those rare Kashmiri language teachers who worked throughout their lives with a clear vision, unwavering commitment and a deep sense of mission. His literary journey continues to inspire generations of lovers of Kashmiri language and literature.
A prolific writer, poet, researcher, translator and critic, Nishat Ansari authored dozens of books, besides contributing numerous articles, talks and features that were published, broadcast and telecast from time to time. He left behind five notable poetic collections, among which his celebrated collection “Gulnaar” received an award from the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.
He also authored acclaimed monographs on eminent literary personalities, including Prof. Mohi-ud-Din Hajini, Dil-Soz Natipori and Jigar Muradabadi, reflecting his deep scholarship and commitment to documenting the lives and contributions of distinguished figures.
One of Nishat Sahib’s significant literary achievements was his poetic translation of the Shruks of Shaikh-ul-Aalam Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA) into Urdu. The work was published by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, under the title “Salsabeel.” He also translated the biographical profile of Dr. Zakir Hussain, former President of India, into Kashmiri. This outstanding translation was honoured by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, in 2007, after Nishat Ansari’s death.
His scholarly contribution also included the research work “Kasher Marsi,” published by the University of Kashmir, further establishing his reputation as a serious researcher and literary scholar.
Throughout his life, Nishat Sahib remained associated with several prestigious national and regional institutions, including All India Radio, Doordarshan Kendra, Sahitya Akademi, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), and the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE). He made valuable contributions to these institutions through his literary knowledge and abilities.
Nishat Sahib was equally committed to strengthening literary organisations. He was a founder member of literary bodies such as Daira-e-Adab Delina and Adbi Markaz Kamraz. The latter, today regarded as a major literary umbrella organisation with deep roots across Jammu and Kashmir, benefited immensely from his organisational skills and literary vision. He served as its Vice-President and General Secretary and was widely respected for his professionalism, discipline and meticulous record-keeping.
His literary journey is, indeed, an inspiration for all lovers of adab. He demonstrated through his life that literature is not merely an expression of thought but also a powerful means of preserving language, culture, identity and collective memory.

A Life Dedicated to Education

Nishat Ansari was born on 23 December 1928 at Delina, Baramulla. “Nishat Ansari” was his pen name, while his name in school records was Ghulam Mustafa Ansari.
He passed his Matriculation examination in 1969 from the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education. He initially began his government service in the Cooperative Department of Jammu and Kashmir. However, guided by his inner calling and love for education, he later resigned from the department and joined the School Education Department as a General Line Teacher.
He served the Education Department for nearly 23 years, performing his duties with dedication, sincerity, commitment and honesty. In recognition of his merit and contribution, he was honoured with the Best Teacher Award by the School Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir.

A Multifaceted Personality

Nishat Sahib was truly a well-rounded and multifaceted personality—a poet of repute, writer, researcher, translator, critic, teacher, educationist, and passionate advocate of language and culture. Above all, he was remembered as a compassionate and good human being.
His life was a rare blend of scholarship, service and humility. His writings enriched Kashmiri literature, his teaching inspired students, and his organisational work strengthened the literary institutions to which he devoted himself.
Nishat Ansari passed away on 25 August 2000 at his residence in Delina, Baramulla.
Twenty-six years after his passing, his literary legacy continues to live on. His books, translations, research and institutional contributions remain a valuable part of the cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. Remembering Nishat Ansari is, therefore, not merely an act of remembrance—it is a reaffirmation of our responsibility to preserve and promote the language, literature and culture to which he dedicated his life.
