NH-44 upgrade to be ready by 2027

June 24, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, June 23: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has said that the long-pending upgradation of the Srinagar–Jammu highway (NH44) will be largely completed by 2027 end, significantly improving connectivity between the Union Territory’s twin capitals.

NHAI Regional Officer Jammu Radhay Shyam Yadav said the 300-km highway has now been reduced to 245 km due to tunnels and viaducts, of which only 15 km remains under construction, while 230 km is already complete. A key 3.5-km Digdol–Khooni Nallah tunnel in Ramban is expected to open soon, leaving just 11.5 km of work pending.
Major structures, including the Ramsoo viaduct and Marog–Digdol tunnel, are targeted for completion by mid-2027, though full four-laning may extend to the end of 2027.
The officer also said the Katra–Amritsar–Delhi Expressway is progressing rapidly, with major Jammu and Kathua stretches expected to open in phases from this year, and full completion targeted by next year. Once ready, travel between Katra and Delhi could reduce to around six hours.
Nearly 90% work on key packages between Balsua and Kathua is complete, while the Kunjwani–Satwari stretch will open within months. The Jammu Ring Road project is also nearing completion, with 55 of 58 km already done.
NHAI further said repairs after 2025 rain damage have been completed, and remaining bridges and protection works are under progress to ensure safe traffic flow on NH44.
To improve commuter facilities, 20 wayside amenities are planned, with some already operational or near completion at locations including Qazigund, Marhama, and Jhajjar Kotli.
Officials said coordination among NHAI, NHIDCL, BRO, and J&K PWD remains strong for ongoing highway management and upgrades.
