Last night, while I was attending a wedding, I saw a gentleman, dressed in very nice and expensive clothes, sitting on a chair in the middle of the wedding pavilion.
From a distance, his gestures were so impressive that I thought he was a very educated and very decent man, so I went up to him, greeted him and started talking to him.
But the moment he opened his mouth, I was shocked!
The language of this man, whom I considered to be very decent and highly educated, his manner of speaking, the words he used, everything was completely opposite to my expectations. There is a saying in English that one cannot judge a book by its cover. The same happened to me. The man was experimenting with indecent language so freely and uninhibitedly that I could not stand him any more and in the end, I jogged not ten but twenty yards away from him within a short span of five minutes.
At this time, I reviewed and recalled the words taught by saints and visionaries of history in my mind that one should not judge a man's personality by his appearance or by his clothes. And there comes a moment in every person's life when we make a positive guess about another person by looking at his external personality. But when he talks to us, we get to know him, increase our contact, then we realize that this person was not worth keeping in touch with. This means that every person hides behind his tongue.
The tongue is not just a physical organ that a person possesses by default; in fact it is an important part of his personality. When we say important, it means that it is an integral part of our life. But do we really control this integral part of our, is the basic question. How much control do we have over it? Just as we control our hands or feet when we move them, if we want to use a pen on paper, we know which word or letter to form, which figure to form, in the same way we must also have control over our tongue.
Just as a driver controls his body parts rather than controlling a machine while driving a car, so a person needs to control his tongue while interacting socially with people.
The tongue is not just an integral part of the human body but also an integral part of the social life of a person. The social relations of a person depend on his tongue, so gaining control over the tongue and constantly keeping it bridled is a very important task. Should a person surrender his personality to the tongue or should he keep the tongue under his control is not only a question but a riddle that needs to be solved.
The tongue is not only for tasting the food delicacies but it can also break people's hearts, hurt them and torture them. The tongue curses others, it hurts them, deceives people, and lies to others but this is equally relevant that all this work is not of the tongue alone but of man. Contrary to the fact, man blames it on the tongue. Blaming the tongue is neither a skill nor an art, but a perversion. Everything has two uses, one good and the other bad, one that benefits and the other that causes trouble and harm. The same is true of the tongue. For what purpose has God given us the tongue? To speak well, to speak the truth, to raise our voice against injustice, this tongue is to fill the hearts of people with consoling words, the tongue is to comfort people, this tongue is to spread love among people. Every person creates his own unique personality in the minds of people before he opens his mouth, but as soon as his mouth opens and the alchemy of his tongue begins to spread its exuberance, the person is seen hiding behind his tongue.
The person who hides behind his tongue cannot keep people in the dark for long. The moment he lets his tongue loose, the magnificent edifice of his so far strong personality collapses down.
A person's language is his identity. When he opens his tongue, everybody comes to know whether it is a garden of fragrance and the depths of the sea or a swamp of mud and the sting of thorns. The use and choice of language determines his position in the eyes of others. The reflection of his personality is hidden under the tongue.
'Silence is a form of worship' is a common principle professed by many sages and saints. An angry person insults another, but silence is not accepted from both sides and in that anger such words are spoken to each other which sow the seed of hatred towards each other and a change occurs in the thinking of a person.
The person who speaks in anger or in emotions is known by the same identity for the rest of his life.
Sometimes we justify our own unnecessary words as jokes taking them as normal but every word that comes out of our mouth creates a never-ending image for us. We should remember that we are all equal, there is no difference between us, all this deserves a big thank-you to the Almighty God.
Fear your own words, do not use words that will hurt anyone, otherwise we shall be reprimanded in this world as well as in the hereafter resulting in public humiliation and contempt. Don't forget that the words we speak are the mirror of our personality.
