On the ninth death anniversary of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter and party president, Mehbooba Mufti, urged for a revival of his “healing touch” policy to address the region’s challenges.
“Mufti Sahib believed in a healing touch, and today, the people of Jammu and Kashmir need it more than ever,” Mehbooba said, addressing a gathering at her father’s grave in Darashikov Garden, Bijbehara said.
She emphasized the deep emotional and economic wounds afflicting the people of the region.
Cautioning against mistaking calm for resolution, Mehbooba remarked, “The graveyard silence in the region cannot be equated with peace.” She reiterated her father’s vision of working within the Indian Constitution, adding, “We are not asking for the heavens but for the restoration of our lost identity and dignity.”
Mehbooba strongly criticized recent government actions, including land acquisitions and administrative decisions, without local consultation.
“Policies like satellite townships and acquiring productive land for railways are being pushed without taking the people into confidence,” she said.
She also condemned the dismissal of government employees in Kashmir and highlighted the economic struggles faced by Jammu’s business community. “The people of Jammu are suffering massive business losses, yet no efforts are being made to address their plight,” she added.
Underlining the importance of economic revival through trade and connectivity, Mehbooba demanded the reopening of historic routes such as the Muzaffarabad Road, Poonch-Rawalakot Road, and Jammu-Sialkot Road, calling them vital for the region’s prosperity.
“These routes, initiated by Mufti Sayeed, must be revived to ensure economic growth and regional integration,” she asserted.
Addressing her supporters, Mehbooba lauded their resilience during challenging times for the PDP, saying, “Efforts were made to weaken the party, but you stood by us. We remain committed to fighting for your rights and preserving Mufti Sahib’s legacy.”
Earlier in the day, Mehbooba, along with senior party leaders and family members, offered prayers at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s grave, paying tribute to the leader whose vision of reconciliation and development continues to resonate.
