Kohima, Oct 7: As part of the Media Internship Training Programme conducted by Spear Corps, student interns from St Joseph’s University, Tetso College and Patkai Christian College visited an Assam Rifles formation in Kohima and gained first-hand insights into the force’s role, heritage and operational capabilities.
During the visit, the interns interacted with the Inspector General, Assam Rifles (North), and were briefed on the organisation’s responsibilities and its contribution to maintaining security and stability in the North East.
The students also visited the historic Kohima War Cemetery, where they learned about the sacrifices of soldiers who laid down their lives during the Second World War. The visit provided the interns an opportunity to understand the region’s military heritage and the enduring legacy associated with the Battle of Kohima.
A Weapon and Equipment Display was also organised for the visiting interns. They were familiarised with various weapons, equipment and operational capabilities of the Assam Rifles, providing them with practical exposure to the functioning of one of the country’s oldest paramilitary forces.
The interns were further briefed on insurgency in North East India, including the security challenges faced by the region and the role of security forces in counter-insurgency operations.
The interaction enabled the students to gain a broader understanding of the complex security environment in the North East and the importance of coordination between security forces and civil society.
The programme also provided the budding media professionals an opportunity to interact directly with personnel and gain perspectives that can contribute to informed and responsible reporting on security, national integration and the region’s socio-political landscape.
The initiative underlined the importance of familiarising young media professionals with the heritage, responsibilities and operational role of security forces while fostering greater understanding between the media and the security establishment.
