Against the stunning backdrop of Dal Lake, hundreds gathered early Saturday morning at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga, joining millions across the world under this year’s theme — “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
Health and Education Minister Sakina Itoo, along with senior administrative officials including Secretary Health & Medical Education Syed Abid Rashid Shah, led the celebrations. The event drew a diverse crowd of schoolchildren, athletes, medical professionals, and yoga enthusiasts.
Participants performed various yoga asanas, guided by expert instructors who explained the health benefits of each posture. “Yoga is not just physical activity but a holistic path to well-being,” said one instructor. “It promotes mental peace and physical resilience — much needed in today’s stressful times.”
In her address, Minister Itoo emphasized the rising awareness of fitness and mental health in Kashmir. “Yoga is becoming an essential tool for preventive healthcare. Just a few minutes daily can keep many chronic illnesses at bay,” she said.
Referring to the continued success of Yoga Day celebrations, Syed Abid Rashid Shah noted, “Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself led the event here at SKICC. Participation continues to grow, which is a testament to yoga’s widespread acceptance.”
Similar events were held at Lal Chowk’s Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), the J&K and Ladakh High Court, and at district levels across the Valley. Local administrations conducted yoga demonstrations and awareness sessions throughout the day.
Participants, especially young women, appreciated the benefits of integrating yoga into their lives. “Yoga should be part of school routines,” said Shivani, a student. “It helps us avoid dependency on medicines.” Another participant, Purnima, highlighted its holistic value: “Yoga is about balance — physical, emotional, and social.”
A senior attendee, Nanaji, added, “Yoga is India’s gift to the world. It’s heartening to see how it’s transcending borders and beliefs.”
Experts stressed that yoga is more than asanas; it includes pranayama (breathing), meditation, and mindfulness, which regulate stress and enhance overall health.
The International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly in 2014 and was adopted by a record 177 nations. Since the first celebration in 2015, June 21 has become a global observance promoting holistic health and unity.
