
Bringing laurels to the institution the Department of Earth Sciences , University of Kashmir(KU) yet again proved its mettle in the field of geological sciences by bagging national level award.
To honour excellence in geological research and its real-world applications, Prof. Ghulam Jeelani, Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Head, Department of Earth Sciences, KU has been awarded the prestigious National Geoscience Award 2024 in the category of Applied Geology by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India.
The award recognises his significant contributions to applied geological studies with a focus on water resources in Western Himalayas.
With over two decades of impactful research and academic service, Prof. Jeelani has significantly advanced the understanding of Himalayan hydrology, isotope hydrology, hydrogeochemistry, cryospheric dynamics and environmental geology.
Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan while congratulating Prof. Jeelani on the national recognition said, “It is a proud moment for the entire University. His achievement highlights the academic and research excellence nurtured at our institution."
Dean Research KU, Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat also extended his congratulations, calling the award a reflection of the university’s growing impact in the field of scientific research.
“This honour will inspire many budding researchers at the university to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to their fields,” he said.
Prof. Ghulam Jeelani expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Mines, GoI, and the University, stating that the award is both an honour and a responsibility. He said the recognition encourages him to continue working on research that addresses critical environmental and geological challenges in the region.
