
A three-day skill development workshop on ‘Translation in Indian Languages—Kashmiri and Sanskrit’ began at the Main campus of the University of Kashmir (KU). The workshop is being organised by the varsity’s Department of Kashmiri in collaboration with the National Translation Mission (NTM), Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore.
It aims to build translation skills among participants, promote linguistic exchange, and encourage the use of Indian languages in academic and literary contexts.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said, “Translation plays an important role in connecting languages and knowledge systems. Strengthening such skills can help make academic and literary content more accessible across linguistic boundaries.”
Dean Academic Affairs, KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, in his remarks, said that initiatives like these are important for promoting multilingual scholarship and preserving linguistic diversity.
Registrar, KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said that the University continues to support programmes that encourage academic engagement with Indian languages and translation practices.
Officer In-charge, NTM, Dr.Tariq Khan, in his virtual address, spoke about the objectives of the National Translation Mission and highlighted the role of translation in knowledge dissemination and cultural exchange.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dean, School of Arts, Languages and Literature and Head, Department of Kashmiri, KU, Prof. Aejaz Mohammad Sheikh, highlighted the importance of such workshops in developing practical translation skills and strengthening academic engagement with regional languages.
The three-day workshop includes expert lectures, practical translation exercises, and interactive sessions focused on Kashmiri and Sanskrit texts. It is being attended by students and research scholars of languages from across the campus.
The proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr. Tanveer Ahmad, faculty at Department of Kashmiri KU, while Jnana Murthy B R, resource person from Central Institute of Indian Languages NTM, delivered the vote of thanks.
