
Srinagar Oc 2: The University of Kashmir (KU) celebrated Gandhi Jayanti, paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and commemorating his enduring legacy of truth, non-violence, peace and cleanliness.
Organised by the varsity's Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW), in collaboration with the Shri Pran Kishore Kaul Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA), the event aimed to promote Gandhian values and sensitise students towards social responsibility, community service and environmental cleanliness.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, highlighted the continued relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy and emphasised the role of educational institutions in nurturing values of peace and compassion among young people.
“Gandhian values of truth, non-violence and social service remain deeply relevant today. Educational institutions have an important role in inspiring young people to imbibe these ideals and contribute towards building a peaceful, inclusive and responsible society,” she said.
Registrar, KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, noted the significance of preserving and promoting Gandhi’s legacy, noting that his ideals of peace, harmony and collective responsibility continue to inspire generations.
Controller of Examinations, KU, Prof. Majid Zaman Baba highlighted the importance of Gandhian ideals in everyday life and stressed on the need to promote discipline, integrity and social responsibility among students.
Dean Students Welfare KU, Prof. Seema Singh, emphasised the importance of engaging students in activities that promote Gandhian values and encourage active participation in community welfare.
Students of IMFA bought Gandhi's ideals to life through creative expressions in painting and poster art. An open-air exhibition showcased their artistic interpretations, complemented by a cleanliness drive that translated Gandhian ideals of simplicity, service and cleanliness into action. The event was moderated by Cultural Officer DSW KU, Dr. Shahid Ali Khan.
The event was attended by various University officers, faculty members and students of the campus.
The celebration reflected the University’s commitment to promoting Gandhian values among students and promoting a culture of peace, social responsibility and community service.
