Kashmir’s tourism slowly edges toward recovery ahead of winter

December 07, 2025 | BK News Service

As winter approaches, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg — three of Kashmir’s most iconic tourist destinations — are quietly gearing up for a possible comeback after a deeply troubled 2025

Early snowfall and forecasts of winter snow have rekindled hope. Tourism stakeholders say that powdery slopes and alpine terrain might draw back snow sports lovers and winter seekers.
The local administration has reopened several previously closed sites — as many as 16 tourist destinations across Kashmir were reopened this year after being shut post attack.
Increased interest in travel packages and a renewed flow of inquiries indicates rising confidence among domestic tourists.
The aftermath of the violent incident earlier in the year severely dented tourist footfall: many hotels and resorts in Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam reported zero bookings for months thanks to fear and uncertainty.
Official figures show a steep drop in tourist arrivals during the first half of 2025 — nearly a 52% fall compared to the same period in 2024.
Some destinations remain restricted even now, frustrating both locals and travellers.
Dependence on snowfall remains a major risk — uneven snowfall or climate unpredictability could again hurt winter tourism prospects.
Local authorities and tourism stakeholders are banking on winter — historically Kashmir’s strongest season — to revive the valley’s tourism economy. Gulmarg’s famed ropeway, snow slopes, and alpine environment remain major draws once snow arrives.
Moreover, reopening of tourist sites, security assurances, and promotional efforts aim to rebuild confidence among domestic traveller.
The green shoots of revival are visible: rising hotel bookings, snowfall predictions, and reopened tourism spots all suggest Kashmir might be on the path to recovery. Yet, full restoration — especially to pre 2025 levels — may take time. Much depends on snow, continued security, and travellers’ confidence.
If the winter plays out well, Gulmarg could reclaim its role as a premier snow tourism and ski destination. Pahalgam and Sonmarg too have potential to attract those seeking scenic beauty and quieter winter escapes.
