
The historic Tagore Hall Srinagar today resonated with the grandeur of classical theatre as the Kashmiri adaptation of Doctor Faustus was performed at 3:00 PM before an enthusiastic audience. Mr. Tanvir Sadiq Member Legislative Assembly Zadibal constituency was Chief Guest, and Mr. Aijaz Ahmad Hakak Principal Amar Singh College , and Adeel Saleem Additional Secretary J and K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Srinagar was Guest of Honour.
Students of Schools, Colleges and University were attended this event and provided an excellent opportunity for students of Mass Media , Journalism and especially concerned with cultural activities to engage with the vibrant theatre culture of Kashmir. So that they can observe, learn, and gain valuable insights into theatre activities in Kashmir.
Originally written by Christopher Marlowe, Doctor Faustus was adapted into Kashmiri by eminent scholar & Poet by Prof. G. N. Firaq. The stage adaptation and dramatization were carried out by noted theatre personality Dr. Sohan Lal Koul, while the play was directed with creative finesse by Altaf Hussain.
The performance was organized by the Young Dramatists Society Group , under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as part of the Guru-Shishya Parampara scheme of the National School of Drama (NSD).
The play captivated the audience with its powerful performances, innovative staging, and the timeless moral conflict at the heart of Marlowe’s masterpiece, brought alive in the rich and expressive Kashmiri language.
This event not only showcased the strength of Kashmiri theatre but also reflected the commitment of young dramatists to preserve and promote cultural heritage through classical works presented in the local idiom.
