Joint operations bust ₹76.12 Cr smuggling network in Northeast

New Delhi, Aug 2: In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling and narcotics trafficking, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps, in close coordination with the State Police, conducted a series of intelligence-based joint operations across Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura throughout July 2026, leading to the apprehension of 43 individuals and the seizure of contraband worth approximately ₹76.12 crore.

According to official details, the operations were carried out between July 1 and July 31, 2026, targeting drug trafficking networks and illegal smuggling activities operating across the four northeastern states.
During the month-long operations, security forces recovered around 3.67 kg of heroin and approximately 14.95 kg of methamphetamine, Yaba and crystal meth, along with nearly 30,000 Yaba tablets, dealing a significant blow to narcotics syndicates operating in the region.
The joint teams also seized a large quantity of other contraband, including 3,500 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, 7.03 kg of marijuana, 62,484 kg of areca nuts, 2,37,800 foreign cigarette sticks, and approximately 14,575 kg of poppy seeds, all intended for illegal trade.
A total of 43 suspects involved in drug trafficking and smuggling activities were apprehended during the coordinated operations. The recovered narcotics and other contraband, with an estimated market value of ₹76.12 crore, have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings.
Officials said the operations highlight the close coordination between the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and State Police, reflecting a sustained commitment to dismantling organized crime networks, curbing cross-border smuggling and preventing the flow of narcotics into the region.
Security agencies reiterated that intelligence-driven operations against drug traffickers and other criminal networks will continue with renewed intensity to safeguard national security and maintain peace and stability across the Northeast
