Kalyani (West Bengal), Feb 18: Jammu and Kashmir scripted a historic milestone on Wednesday by reaching the Ranji Trophy final for the first time in their 67-year history. The team defeated two-time former champions Bengal by six wickets on day four of the semifinal.
Chasing a modest target of 126 set by Bengal, J&K achieved it in 34.4 overs, with standout contributions from Vanshaj Sharma (43 not out) and Abdul Samad (30 not out), who guided the team to victory. The team’s pace spearhead Auqib Nabi had earlier dismantled Bengal’s batting lineup, claiming nine wickets in the match and virtually sealing the win for the visitors.
J&K made their Ranji Trophy debut in the 1959-60 season but were not considered serious contenders until recent years. Their first knockout qualification came in the 2013-14 season. On Tuesday, at stumps on day three, J&K were 43/2. Despite early losses of Shubham Pundir (27) and skipper Paras Dogra (9) on day four, Vanshaj and Samad’s 55-run partnership ensured a historic win.

Match summary:

Bengal: 328 & 99 (25.1 overs)
Jammu & Kashmir: 302 & 126/4 (34.4 overs)

The victory drew widespread acclaim from officials and cricketing veterans. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted, “Congratulations to J&K cricket team on their magnificent victory in the Ranji Trophy semi-final! You have etched a new golden chapter in the sporting history of J&K. Entire UT is proud of your extraordinary performance.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the team’s discipline and collective effort, expressing hope that J&K players will soon play a key role in the national team. Sports Minister Satish Sharma congratulated the team on social media, calling it a historic achievement.
Former J&K Ranji captain Ashwani Gupta said, “Reaching the final is not just a milestone; it is a dream come true for every cricketer and supporter of Jammu and Kashmir. You have inspired an entire generation.”
Senior JKCA selector Sameer Khajuria and former Women’s Cricket Team captain Roopali Slathia also lauded the team’s efforts, emphasizing the determination, unity, and resilience displayed throughout the season. Slathia highlighted the contributions of Aqib Nabi, Yudhvir Singh, Sunil Kumar, and acknowledged the pivotal roles of Paras Dogra, Ajay Sharma, P. Krishnan, and mentor Mithun Manhas in shaping J&K cricket.
This landmark victory heralds a new era for cricket in Jammu and Kashmir, inspiring young players and signaling the region’s growing presence on India’s domestic cricket map.
