Srinagar, Oct 17: Security forces foiled a suspected infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district during the early hours of Saturday, triggering a brief exchange of fire, officials said.

The brief exchange of fire occurred between 3 am and 4 am in the Jumgund area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Trehgam Police Station.
According to initial reports, security personnel detected suspicious movement along the LoC, following which a brief exchange of fire took place.
Further details regarding the incident were awaited.
Army has not issued any statement on the operation so far.
Infiltration attempts along the LoC are often reported to increase during the period preceding winter, as militants may attempt to cross into the Valley before heavy snowfall blocks the mountain passes and renders several routes inaccessible.
Army generally intensifies surveillance and area domination operations along vulnerable stretches of the LoC during this period to prevent infiltration attempts.
