Horticulture: The Back Bone of Economy

October 23, 2025 | Sahil Manzoor Bhatti

After tourism and education, the horticulture sector now plays a vital role in Kashmir’s economy. This sector has made immense contributions in uplifting employment and continues to do its best in supporting thousands of livelihoods across the Valley.

Unfortunately, this year the rates of apples dropped drastically — from ₹1200 and ₹1000 per box to just around ₹500 — a price that is neither fair nor adequate for growers.
It is rightly said that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Indeed, our health is more important than anything else, as it determines our fate and shapes our lives. In today’s world, health has become a global concern, and much of it depends on our lifestyle and dietary choices.
Smart, educated, and health-conscious individuals understand the importance of eating right. A simple yet effective way to maintain good health is by consuming nutritious foods, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables. These natural blessings keep us fit, active, and energetic throughout the day.
Almighty God has blessed us with countless fruits on this earth, which we have been enjoying for centuries. However, it is essential for everyone to have basic knowledge about what they eat. Our diet should align with our body’s requirements, depending on our daily activity and energy expenditure. Regular health checkups are equally important for maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
Health Benefits of Apples
Apples are among the most loved and delicious fruits in the world, known for their immense nutritional value. Packed with vitamin C, minerals, antioxidants, and fibre, apples support digestion, strengthen immunity, and help prevent chronic diseases such as cancer.
Key Benefits of Apples:
Rich in Antioxidants: Help protect against deadly diseases like cancer.
Aid in Weight Loss: High fibre content slows digestion, stabilizes blood sugar, and helps prevent overeating.
Diabetes-Friendly: Soluble fibre slows sugar absorption and improves blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Improve Digestion: Eating 2–3 apples daily promotes bowel movement and prevents constipation.
Keep You Hydrated: High water content helps maintain body hydration.
Kashmiri Apples – Pride of the Valley
The Kashmir Valley is world-famous for its apple production, contributing significantly to India’s fruit industry and exports. Kashmiri apples are cherished globally for their unique taste, texture, and quality. Growers across the region continue to work tirelessly to enhance production and maintain standards.
Seasonal fruits and vegetables are truly nature’s medicine, helping us build immunity and resist diseases. We should not only consume them ourselves but also inspire our friends and family to adopt healthy eating habits.
