Rajouri, Aug 16: Fresh spells of heavy rainfall in Rajouri have triggered renewed concern among residents and authorities, with the district remaining vulnerable to flash floods, landslides and waterlogging following earlier episodes of severe weather.

The latest rainfall comes amid a broader wet spell forecast across Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has warned of rain and thundershowers at many places, with the possibility of intense showers in parts of the Jammu division through August 19.
Rajouri remains particularly sensitive to intense rainfall after devastating flash floods and landslides in July caused loss of life and extensive damage in the district and neighbouring Poonch. The earlier disaster also disrupted roads, damaged agricultural land and affected public infrastructure.
Recent heavy showers have continued to pose a threat to low-lying and vulnerable areas. In Mehra village of Rajouri, earlier flash floods washed away agricultural land and standing crops, compounding losses suffered during the July floods. Repeated erosion has also affected riverbanks and altered water channels in some areas.
The renewed weather activity has prompted authorities and residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas close to rivers, streams, nallahs and landslide-prone slopes. Sudden rises in water levels can occur during intense rainfall, while saturated slopes may become unstable.
The latest forecast indicates that Jammu is likely to experience heavy rain on August 17 and 18, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, underscoring the need for continued preparedness across the Jammu region.
With the region still recovering from earlier rain-related damage, the fresh spell has heightened concerns among farming communities and residents living in vulnerable locations. Authorities are expected to maintain close monitoring of weather conditions and respond promptly to any emerging flood, landslide or infrastructure-related threat.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution and follow official weather and disaster-management advisories, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
