Gund Jahangir residents grapple with contaminated water

October 19, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Bandipora, Oct 18: Residents of Gund Jahangir in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district are reportedly facing serious hardships due to the supply of contaminated drinking water, raising concerns over public health and the functioning of the concerned authorities.

The residents allege that the water being supplied to their locality is unfit for consumption, forcing families to depend on an unsafe source for their daily needs. The situation has caused concern among locals, who say access to clean and safe drinking water remains a basic necessity that cannot be compromised.
Residents fear that consuming contaminated water could expose people, particularly children, elderly persons and those with existing health vulnerabilities, to waterborne diseases. They have urged the concerned departments to take immediate measures to ensure that every household receives safe drinking water.
The issue has also raised questions about the monitoring of water quality, maintenance of supply infrastructure and the response of the authorities to complaints from affected areas. Residents want the concerned agencies to investigate the source of contamination and take corrective measures without further delay.
Locals have called upon the Jal Shakti Department and the district administration to collect water samples for laboratory testing, identify the cause of contamination and ensure the supply of potable water until the problem is resolved. They have also sought regular monitoring of the water supply system to prevent a recurrence.
For residents, the concern goes beyond inconvenience. Safe drinking water is essential for public health, and its absence places an avoidable burden on families who rely on the public supply for their daily requirements.
The residents have appealed to the authorities to visit the locality, assess the situation on the ground and take time-bound action. They said that assurances alone would not resolve their difficulties and called for a lasting solution to ensure a safe and reliable water supply.
The pressing question remains: when will the authorities address the plight of Gund Jahangir residents and ensure that access to clean drinking water is treated as a priority?
