Guardians of Security

October 17, 2026 | BK EDITORIAL

The National Security Guard (NSG) represents India’s resolve to confront terrorism and respond to extraordinary security threats with courage, precision and professionalism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s praise for the force’s courage and vigilance on its Raising Day is a timely reminder of the sacrifices made by personnel who operate under immense pressure to protect the nation. Popularly known as the Black Cats, the NSG was established in 1984 as a specialised counter-terrorism force. Over the decades, it has developed expertise in counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue and responding to complex security emergencies. Its personnel undergo rigorous training to make split-second decisions where lives may depend on accuracy, discipline and teamwork. Yet, the significance of the NSG extends beyond its operational capabilities. Its presence reflects the importance of preparedness in an era when security threats are becoming increasingly complex. Terrorism, radicalisation, organised crime and emerging technological vulnerabilities demand constant adaptation. Security agencies cannot afford complacency, even during periods of relative calm. The NSG’s effectiveness depends not merely on the courage of individual commandos but also on intelligence-sharing, inter-agency coordination, modern equipment and continuous training. Security preparedness must remain a sustained national priority rather than a response triggered only by a major incident.Equally important is the need to strengthen the technological capabilities of specialised forces. Advances in surveillance, artificial intelligence, drones and cyber operations are changing the nature of security challenges. Training and equipment must evolve accordingly, while safeguards ensure that security measures remain consistent with the rule of law. The nation must also recognise the human cost of such service. Personnel entrusted with protecting others often work under demanding conditions, facing physical risks and psychological stress. Their welfare, access to specialised healthcare, family support and post-service rehabilitation deserve sustained attention. Public appreciation for the NSG should therefore translate into stronger institutional support, adequate resources and policies that enable personnel to perform their duties effectively. At the same time, citizens have a role in strengthening national security by remaining alert, reporting suspicious activity responsibly and rejecting the spread of misinformation during emergencies. Prime Minister Modi’s tribute is an acknowledgement of the force’s contribution, but national security cannot rest on one organisation alone. It requires cooperation among intelligence agencies, police forces, the armed forces, emergency services and the public. The NSG’s courage inspires confidence; its vigilance underscores the need for constant preparedness. A secure India requires both brave personnel on the front line and institutions capable of anticipating threats before they turn into tragedies. Honouring the Black Cats means ensuring that they remain equipped, trained and supported for the challenges ahead.
