GDC B’la organizes vibrant North-Zone inter-college competitions

Government Degree College (GDC), Baramulla, serving as the lead college, hosted a series of vibrant inter-college competitions to celebrate Independence Day 2024.

The event, involving colleges from across North Kashmir, commenced at 10:30 AM with the national anthem and college tarana, followed by inaugural addresses from Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo and a welcome address by Dean Students Welfare and senior-most faculty Prof. Shagufta Nasreen. The program was conducted under the overall guidance of Principal Prof. Mohammad Shafi Lone.

National Anthem Singing Competition

An inter-college National Anthem Singing Competition was held in the college auditorium, showcasing participants' patriotism through music. Judging was based on pitch and tone accuracy, rhythm and tempo, expression and emotion, and stage presence. The panel of judges included Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo, Dr. Humaira Qadri, Dr. Syed Mutahar Aaqib from the host college, and Prof. Waseem Ahmad from GDC Handwara. Coordinating members for this event were Dr. Sameena Ismail, Prof. Ishfaq Ul Rahman, and Prof. Naveed Ahmad. Razia Farooq of GDC Baramulla won first place, with Fida Hussain of GDC Uri and Ainul Brijes of GDC Tangmarg securing second and third positions, respectively. Winners received cash prizes of Rs 1500, 1000, and 700. The event also featured performances by Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo and Dr. Syed Mutahar Aaqib, concluding with reflections on the nation’s history and diversity.

Painting Competition

Held in the Conference Hall of the college, the Painting Competition saw Haya Azad from GDC Women Sopore winning first place. Syed Usman Geelani from GDC URI and Sadiya Fayaz from GDC Sopore achieved second and third places, respectively. The competition was coordinated by Dr. Danish Nabi Gadda, Prof. Aaliya Akhter, and Dr. Upandeep Kour, with the judging panel comprising Prof. Shagufta Nasreen, Dr. Sheikh Bilal, and Dr. Abdul Rauf Bhat.

Quiz Competition

An Inter-College Quiz Competition was organized for colleges in the North Zone of Baramulla to foster a spirit of knowledge-sharing and patriotism among students. The quiz covered the theme "Freedom Struggle and National Heroes" and was supervised by Dr. Ibrahim Khaja and Dr. Nazir Ahmad Mir, with Prof. Ishfaq Ul Rahman as the host. The quiz competition was coordinated by Dr. Ibrahim Khaja, Prof. Ishfaq Ul Rahman, and Prof. Nazir Ahmad Mir. Jury members included Prof. Sadat Kar, Prof. Zahid Hussain Najar, Prof. Nuzhat Rehman of GDC Baramulla, and Prof. Riyaz Ahmad Wani of GDC Dangiwacha. The competition featured four rounds, with two teams reaching the final. GDC Women Baramulla’s Nazish Ali and Sania Fareed secured first place, followed by Owais Asad Mir and Romisa Iqbal of GDC Boniyar in second place, and Mehwish Nazir and Nuzhat Afroz of GDC Women Sopore in third place. The event was a grand success, celebrating academic excellence and competitive spirit, and the winners were awarded trophies and certificates.

Essay Writing Competition

The inter-college Essay Writing Competition, themed Unsung Heroes of Freedom Struggle, featured eleven students. The competition was coordinated by Prof. Humayun Shabir, Prof. Lukman Amin, Prof. Rukhsana Akhter, and Dr. Sameer Farooq Parsa. The judging panel included Dr. Aasiya Zahoor, Dr. Nisar Iqbal Wani, and Dr. Mudasir Ahmad Qureshi. Winners included Afsah Taufeeq from GDC Tangmarg securing first place, followed by Fazila Ghulam from GDC Uri and Asmat Ahad from GDC Thindam Kreeri in second and third places, respectively. The competition aimed to highlight lesser-known figures in India’s independence movement, fostering a deeper understanding of their contributions.
