The family of a policeman who was one among 9 dead passengers in a tragic road accident Monday appealed to the government to re-launch an operation on the spot of accident in Chenab River and retrieve the body of their family member Altaf Ahmed Rather.

The family of Altaf Ahmed Rather who was working as Operator in Jammu Kashmir Police Department emerged in Press Enclave Srinagar and appealed to police and civil administration to start an operation once again so that bodies of missing persons could be traced.
Pertinently, nine persons including 4 IRP cops were present in Tempo Traveller (JK14-D7929) after it rolled down into the Chenab in the Mehar area of Ramban district on 31 August. One passenger hailing from Chandrigam Awantipora identified as Mehrajuddin son of Gulam Moinuddin had miraculously escaped in the accident.
At the time of the accident, the operation was not launched immediately due to high water level in the Chenab River.
“We visited every office and appealed to top officials to re-launch operation. My maternal uncle is still untraceable. We want his body to be retrieved,” Gousia Bano who hails from Sherpora Pattan said.
She said Altaf was posted at Kunzar Police Station. “Due to his transfer to Banihal, he was supposed to join his duties when the fateful accident occurred,” she said adding that the Government neither helped them nor any official visited their house.
“Some of the family members are camping near the accident spot from past over a month seeking help from professional divers, spending money from their own pocket,” she said and sought intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. (KNT)
