Dy CM Chowdhary bans mining near bridges

January 27, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Chadoora, Jan 27: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdhary on Tuesday announced a blanket ban on mining activities near bridges, following reports that illegal mining allegedly damaged a bridge in Chadoora, Budgam district.
Addressing reporters, Chowdhary said such activities would not be tolerated, particularly when they endanger public infrastructure. He noted that the bridge, built at a cost of several crores, has suffered losses due to irresponsible mining practices.
“We do not want this kind of mining where public assets are destroyed and losses are suffered,” he said, adding that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
The Deputy Chief Minister directed the District Mineral Officer to ensure that an FIR is registered against individuals carrying out mining beneath the bridge. He emphasised that accountability must be fixed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Accompanied by MLA Ali Muhammad Dar, Chowdhary also inspected multiple locations in Chadoora to review snow clearance operations. Officials briefed him on the progress of snow removal and measures taken to ensure smooth movement on roads amid ongoing adverse weather.
He stressed the importance of timely snow clearance and restoration of essential services to minimise public inconvenience.
