Dogs overrun press colony

February 23, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, Feb 22: Residents of Press Colony are raising concerns as stray dogs have increasingly taken over the streets, creating a challenging environment for locals. According to residents, packs of stray dogs roam freely in the colony, often obstructing roads, chasing pedestrians, and causing traffic disruptions.

Local shopkeepers and commuters report incidents where dogs have damaged property, rummaged through garbage, and growled at residents, making daily life difficult. “It has become unsafe to walk in the colony, especially for children and the elderly,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a long-time resident.
Residents have urged the Jammu & Kashmir municipal authorities to step in and address the growing menace. Suggestions include organized dog control drives, sterilization programs, and the construction of proper shelters for stray dogs to prevent further disturbances.
Despite repeated complaints, officials say limited resources and manpower have hindered large-scale interventions. They assured that a plan is underway to conduct sterilization and vaccination drives, and to collaborate with animal welfare organizations for humane management of stray dogs.
Meanwhile, locals continue to navigate the colony carefully, avoiding areas heavily frequented by stray dogs, and hope that timely action will restore safety and normalcy in the community.
