Allah's Eternal Knowledge and Divine Decree
Almighty Allah possesses perfect and eternal knowledge and most importantly the knowledge about unseen which is not yet explored to human beings. He knows the past, the present, and the future in their entirety. Based on His infinite knowledge, He has written the destiny of all creation. However, this writing is not an act of compulsion; rather, it is a reflection of His perfect knowledge. Allah does not force people to commit certain actions. Instead, He already knows what choices they will freely make i'e free will.
Human Free Will and Choice
According to Islamic teachings, Allah has granted human beings a degree of free will. Within this sphere of choice, every person can choose between good and evil. This is precisely why people are rewarded for righteous deeds and punished for sinful actions. If human beings had no choice whatsoever, then reward and punishment would lose all meaning.
The Qur'anic Perspective
The Qur'an presents both aspects—human responsibility and Divine decree.
Human Choice
"And that man shall have nothing except what he strives for."
(Surah An-Najm 53:39)
"Indeed, We guided him to the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful."(Surah Ad-Dahr 76:3)»
These verses affirm that human beings have been granted the ability to choose their path.
Divine Decree
"Indeed, We created everything according to a precise measure."
(Surah Al-Qamar 54:49)
"Allah guides whom He wills and lets go astray whom He wills."
(Surah Ibrahim 14:4)
These verses emphasize that everything occurs within Allah's knowledge, wisdom, and decree.
Maintaining the Balance Between Predestination and Free Will
Islam rejects two extremes:
Absolute Determinism (Jabr): The belief that humans are completely compelled and possess no choice is incorrect because the Qur'an repeatedly affirms human responsibility and accountability.
Absolute Freedom (Qadar): The belief that humans are entirely independent of Allah's will is also incorrect because nothing exists outside Allah's knowledge and power.
The correct Islamic understanding lies between these two extremes.
Why Are Humans Rewarded or Punished?
If human beings were completely forced to act, then the Day of Judgment would have no purpose. The Qur'an clearly states:
"And that man shall have nothing except what he strives for."
(Surah An-Najm 53:39)
Every individual will therefore be judged according to the choices they freely made.
Does Divine Decree Restrict Human Choice?
A crucial point to understand is that Allah's knowledge of an event is different from forcing that event to occur. Allah has granted people the freedom to make choices within the limits He has set, and therefore they remain accountable for those choices.
Illustrative Examples
The Teacher and the Student
Imagine a teacher who has taught students throughout the academic year. Based on experience and observation, the teacher can often predict which student is likely to pass and which is likely to fail. During the examination, however, each student answers the questions through their own effort and choice. The teacher's prediction does not force anyone to succeed or fail. Likewise, Allah already knows the choices people will make without compelling them to make those choices.
The Game Developer and the Player
A video game developer designs all possible paths and outcomes within a game. If a player turns right, one sequence follows; if they turn left, another unfolds. The developer knows every possible outcome beforehand, but the player freely decides which path to take. Similarly, Allah has created the framework of life, while human beings freely choose the path they wish to follow.
Parents and Their Child
Parents often know their child's behavior so well that they can predict how the child will react in a particular situation. For example, they may know that a mischievous child is likely to break a toy. This knowledge does not force the child to break it; rather, it is based on familiarity with the child's character. Likewise, Allah's perfect knowledge does not compel human actions.
A Live Broadcast and a Recorded Match
Consider a person watching a cricket match live. They do not know whether the next ball will result in a six or a wicket. Another person watching a recorded version already knows what will happen next. However, the viewer of the recording has not influenced the outcome of the match. Similarly, human beings experience time moment by moment, whereas Allah exists beyond time and knows the past, present, and future simultaneously.
These examples illustrate that Allah's prior knowledge of events does not eliminate human freedom. People remain responsible for the choices they willingly make.
Understanding Allah's Infinite Knowledge
If an ordinary human being, with limited intelligence and experience, can sometimes understand another person's intentions or predict their decisions, then how much more comprehensive must Allah's knowledge be?
We observe this in everyday life
A psychologist can often infer a person's emotions or intentions through facial expressions and behavior.
A mother usually knows what her child wants before the child even speaks.
A teacher can predict a student's performance by observing their preparation.
These are ordinary human beings with limited knowledge, yet they can sometimes anticipate the actions of others. Allah, the Creator of everything, whose knowledge is infinite and who is beyond time and space, certainly knows the past, present, and future of every individual.
However, one essential distinction must always be remembered: Allah's knowledge does not force human beings to act. His knowledge is not based on observation or prediction but is eternal and perfect. He has always known which path each person will freely choose, while still granting every individual the freedom to choose between righteousness and wrongdoing.
Thus, Divine knowledge does not cancel human free will; rather, it perfectly encompasses the choices that human beings themselves make.
Over all a human being has to accept the will of Almighty Allah which is already predistinated and every action based on free will is also the part of Nadar, this doesn't means we can't compell our free will over predestined facts. We have faith and faith means that what befalls upon whether good or bad is all from Almighty Allah
