Srinagar, Nov 1: The 20 disgruntled NC MLAs have refused to back down from their charter of demands.
According to sources, the 20 dissident legislators, who recently held a closed door meeting at the residence of NC MLA in Srinagar, are demanding a complete overhaul of the Omar Abdullah-led government, including the removal of all existing ministers from their portfolios and the immediate removal of the Chief Minister's Advisor.
Sources privy to the rebel camp said the legislators have placed several conditions before the party leadership to resolve the brewing crisis.
Their primary demand is to relieve all current ministers of their portfolios within 14 days. They have also sought the immediate removal of the Advisor to the Chief Minister.
The dissident MLAs have demanded that the party constitute an entirely new council of ministers through a transparent, merit-based mechanism. They want the leadership to consult the entire legislature party before taking decisions on ministerial appointments, rather than allowing a select group to exercise unilateral control over the process.
The legislators have also raised concerns over the party's ideological commitments and its election manifesto. They have demanded an aggressive push for the restoration of Article 370, Article 35A and other allied constitutional safeguards, while opposing what they perceive as compromises on these issues.
The rebel faction wants the government to take up these demands forcefully with the BJP-led central government.
The dissident MLAs have threatened that if they don’t get any positive response from Abdullahs on their demands, then they would be forced to take some extreme steps.
Senior NC leader and six time MLA Mubarak Gul, who is very upset over his non inclusion in the cabinet, has announced to hold a press conference in Srinagar on November 4 to expose the party.
The dissent in NC has come at a time when party is already facing major challenge over the impending resignation of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.
Ruhullah has announced that he will formally resign from both the National Conference and his Lok Sabha seat on November 3.
He has openly accused the party leadership of diluting its ideological commitments and backing away from the mandate it secured on the promise of challenging the constitutional changes introduced on August 5, 2019.
