Climate Anxiety: From Fear to Action

June 24, 2026 | Dr. Apurba Tiwari

The world is moving at an ever increasing pace. The headlines of rising temperatures, melting glaciers, erratic weather, loss of forests and floods and other natural disasters are no longer just headlines in newspapers but now cause fear for millions of young people all over the world.

This new emotion is in the minds of the younger generation: climate anxiety — a state of profound worry, powerlessness, and fear regarding the fate of our planet.
Climate change is not a future issue.Climate change is not a problem for tomorrow. It's a reality that is happening right now. They are raised in a world that is hotter in summer, more extreme in weather and climate, and unmissed by the question: What kind of a world will we inherit?
The Gen-Xers are the first generation to be burdened by the burden of tomorrow.
There is a special psychological burden on young people today. They do know about climate change, they do experience its impacts in social media and they do hear scientists talking of the problems to come. But at the same time, many feel they have limited power to create change.
Whether it is a student preparing for a career, a young person planning his/her future or a child dreaming about what the future holds, these are all questions people are carrying in their mind that will have a negative impact on their future if they do not resolve it now, before it happens.
Climate anxiety is not just about fear for environmental damage; it is about fear of losing our homes, livelihoods, biodiversity and even the quality of our lives we had enjoyed before.
It's the Digital Age of Climate Fear.
The youth today are exposed to environmental disasters in real time unlike the previous generations. When a fire breaks out in one country, floods in another, or a heat wave somewhere else, they suddenly come across it on their screens.
This ongoing exposure makes one think "the crisis is everywhere" and "the crisis is omnipresent". While social media has helped raise awareness, it has also led to a sense of stress and uncertainty among young minds.
The only question now is, will we be able to save the planet before it's too late?
From Fear to Action: Turning Anxiety Into Hope
Climate anxiety is not something to be taken lightly, it is a positive thing, it is a generation that is very concerned about the future. It's a concern which demonstrates the consciousness of young people regarding nature protection.
The answer is not to deny these fears, but to turn them to action. A little change can make a big difference, for example, in the form of sustainable living, waste reduction, promotion of renewable energy, tree planting, and the demand for responsible policies.
Most importantly, young people have to know that they aren't fighting a battle they can't win. There is a need for collaboration between the government, industry, communities and individuals to create a safer future.
A Future Still Worth Fighting For
Climate change is certainly one of humanity's challenges and fear shouldn't be the end of our story. There are turning points for each generation and the generation we are in today can be the one that helps save the planet for the next.
The Earth does not need a generation afraid; the Earth needs a generation full of hope, courage and responsibility.
¬The future is not only something that we inherit, it is something that we create.
