Imphal, Aug 2: Assam Rifles on Saturday paid solemn tribute to three brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during an encounter with an unidentified armed group in Manipur on August 1, 1973, by organising a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate their valour and devotion to the nation.

The ceremony honoured Naik/GD (Late) Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Rifleman/GD (Late) Yam Bahadur Chhetri, and Lance Naik/GD (Late) Lal Bahadur Chhetri, who were killed in action while courageously confronting hostile elements.
According to official details, on August 1, 1973, a convoy comprising seven personnel, including an Army driver and an Army Non-Commissioned Officer, was moving along the Dimapur–Imphal road at around 10:30 am when it came under heavy fire from an unidentified armed group near Milestone 66.
The troops immediately retaliated and engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of fire. Despite sustaining grievous injuries during the encounter, the three soldiers continued to display exceptional courage before making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
To honour their unparalleled bravery, Assam Rifles organised a wreath-laying ceremony led by the Commandant of the unit, who paid floral tributes and recounted the inspiring story of the fallen heroes, urging all ranks to uphold the values of courage, patriotism and selfless service.
The ceremony witnessed the participation of seven officers, 15 Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), and 58 Other Ranks, who laid wreaths and offered a ceremonial Guard of Honour as a mark of deep respect to the martyrs.
Assam Rifles said the tribute reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to remembering the sacrifices of its brave personnel and preserving their legacy for future generations, inspiring serving soldiers to continue safeguarding the nation with the same dedication and resolve.
